Your First Moon Ritual: A Step‑by‑Step Guide for Beginner Witches
1. Why & When to Perform a Moon Ritual
- Align your intention with the lunar phase – New Moon for beginnings, Full Moon for release or gratitude.
- Choose a time when you won’t be rushed; even 15 minutes of focused energy works.
- Check a moon calendar app or website to confirm the exact phase and visibility in your area.
2. Setting Up Your Sacred Space
- Cleanse the area physically (tidy up) and energetically (smudge with sage, incense, or sound a bell).
- Gather simple tools: a candle (white for general, black for banishing, silver for moon), a small bowl of water, and a journal.
- Cast a circle if it feels right – walk clockwise three times, visualising a protective sphere of light.
3. Grounding & Centering Before You Begin
- Sit comfortably, close your eyes, and take five deep breaths – feel your feet connected to the earth.
- Visualise roots growing from your soles into the ground, drawing up calm, stable energy.
- State aloud or silently: “I am present. I am protected. I am ready to work with the moon.”
4. The Core Ritual: Intention-Setting or Release
- Light your candle and gaze at the flame for a moment – let it represent the moon’s energy.
- For a New Moon: write down one clear intention (e.g., “I welcome abundance”) on a bay leaf, then burn it safely in a fireproof dish.
- For a Full Moon: write what you want to release on paper, then tear it up and dissolve it in the bowl of water (pour outside afterward).
5. Closing the Ritual & Grounding Again
- Thank the moon, your tools, and any deities or spirits you called upon.
- If you cast a circle, walk counter‑clockwise to release it, saying “The circle is open but unbroken.”
- Eat a small snack (bread, fruit) or drink water to re‑ground your physical energy.
6. What to Do After the Ritual
- Journal your experience – note feelings, observations, and any synchronicities in the following days.
- Dispose of
